Leases near campus tend to start and end around the same dates each year, which means moving trucks are booked solid the last weekend of a semester break. If your move date has any flexibility, moving a few days off that peak window usually means an easier time getting an elevator slot and finding truck parking.
Buildings that cater to students often limit each unit to a specific move-in or move-out window on a shared calendar, so confirming your slot ahead of time matters more here than in a typical apartment complex.
Shared spaces and smaller units
Units near campus tend to be smaller, sometimes shared by roommates, which changes the job in a specific way, more trips up and down the stairs or elevator per square foot of the apartment, and often more boxes relative to furniture. We plan for that by expecting a longer carry time rather than a heavier load.
Hallways in these buildings can get busy during peak move weekends with several units moving on the same day, so we try to work efficiently and stay out of the way of other moves happening on the same floor.
What to sort out before the crew arrives
Confirm whether the building requires a certificate of insurance from the moving company before they will let a truck use the loading dock. Some UC Irvine area buildings require this, and it needs to be arranged a few days ahead, not the morning of the move.
If roommates are moving in or out on different days, let us know which portion of the apartment we are handling so the crew does not end up loading someone else's furniture by mistake.
After you move in
Once the crew leaves, check that hallway and elevator areas used during the move are clear and undamaged, since some buildings inspect common areas right after a move-in window closes. Reporting any pre-existing scuffs immediately protects your move-in deposit.
If you are sharing the apartment with roommates arriving on a different day, keep a shared list of what has moved in so nothing gets assumed to be missing when it simply has not arrived yet.
